A Message From The Chairman
At the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Department
of Orthopaedic Surgery, we take pride in a long history of service.
With commitment and compassion we serve the community and the state
of South Carolina through our three-fold mission of education, research
and patient care.
Instruction is provided to medical students through lectures, rounds,
conferences and seminars. Our residency program has produced skilled
orthopaedic surgeons for almost 50 years. Every year we accept two
new residents into the five-year program, which is structured to
provide extensive training in the many facets of orthopaedic surgery.
We are proud of the quality of orthopaedic surgeons whom we have
prepared for practice. Many of these physicians have become internationally
renowned in the field, including Austin Moore, M.D.; Emmett Lunceford,
M.D.; Augusto Sarmiento, M.D.; and Edward Kimbrough, M.D.
We continuously initiate new studies in clinical and basic science
research. Over time these may impact the course of treatment we
prescribe for our patients. Our faculty members also work on research
endeavors in conjunction with our residents, who are required to
submit two publishable projects before completing the residency
program.
Through University Specialty Clinics we provide comprehensive patient
care services, including general orthopaedics, pediatric orthopaedics,
hand surgery, sports medicine, joint replacement surgery,
arthritis care, management of bone and joint injuries (including
fracture care), and metabolic bone disease evaluation. We also serve
the specialized health care needs of athletes and individuals with
an active lifestyle through the USC Sports Medicine Center. A collaborative
effort between the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Department
of Family and Preventive Medicine, the center provides comprehensive care including advanced surgical knee and shoulder reconstruction and primary health care specific to women and children athletes.
